Why NGO’s should collaborate to enhance their impact

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a vital role in addressing various social, environmental and humanitarian issues around the world. However, they often face challenges such as limited resources, competition for funding, and overlapping missions. How can they overcome these obstacles and increase their effectiveness? One possible solution is to collaborate with other NGOs that share similar goals and values.

Collaboration can bring many benefits to NGOs, such as:

  • Sharing knowledge and expertise: By working together, NGOs can learn from each other’s experiences, best practices, and innovations. They can also access new information and networks that can help them improve their services and reach more beneficiaries.
  • Leveraging resources and capacities: By pooling their resources and capacities, NGOs can reduce costs, avoid duplication, and achieve economies of scale. They can also access new sources of funding and support from donors who prefer to fund collaborative projects.
  • Enhancing influence and advocacy: By speaking with one voice, NGOs can amplify their messages and increase their visibility and credibility. They can also influence policy makers and stakeholders more effectively and create positive change in their fields of action.

Collaboration can also help NGOs become more resilient and adaptable to changing contexts and challenges. This is what Nassim Nicholas Taleb calls “antifragile” – a quality that allows systems to not only survive but thrive under stress and uncertainty. Taleb uses the analogy of a single stick that breaks easily under pressure, versus a bundle of sticks that becomes stronger when tied together. Similarly, NGOs that collaborate can withstand shocks and crises better than those that work in isolation.

Antifragility

Radical philosopher Nassim Nicholas Taleb offers a blueprint for how to live – and thrive – in a world we don’t understand, and which is too uncertain for us to even try to predict.

However, collaboration is not easy or straightforward. It requires trust, commitment, communication, and coordination among the partners. It also involves challenges such as:

  • Finding compatible partners: Not all NGOs are suitable for collaboration. They need to have a common vision, mission, and values, as well as compatible organizational cultures, structures, and processes.
  • Managing expectations and conflicts: Collaboration involves negotiation and compromise among the partners. They need to agree on the goals, roles, responsibilities, and resources of the collaboration. They also need to manage potential conflicts and disagreements that may arise during the collaboration.
  • Measuring results and impact: Collaboration requires a clear framework for monitoring and evaluation of the outcomes and impact of the collaboration. The partners need to define the indicators, methods, and tools for measuring their collective performance and learning from their successes and failures.

Therefore, collaboration is not a one-size-fits-all solution for NGOs. It requires careful planning, implementation, and evaluation. It also requires a willingness to learn, adapt, and improve along the way. However, when done well, collaboration can be a powerful strategy for NGOs to enhance their impact and create lasting change in the world.
