Canon – WWF Conservation Partner

Canon Europe and WWF have been working together since 1998 in Europe , the Middle East and Africa , when it became WWF’s first Conservation Partner.

The partnership with Canon Europe not only provides WWF with much needed funds for conservation, but also generates excellent communications and networking opportunities for the organization.

Canon, a world-leading innovator and provider of imaging and information technology solutions for individuals and businesses, takes its responsibility for the environment very seriously.

Environmental issues have always been central to its management strategy. A key principle of Canon’s business philosophy is Kyosei – which means living and working in harmony with our environment – and which in turn fosters environmental responsibility in all its business and manufacturing processes.

Summary of the partnership
With Canon’s support, WWF has been able to completely digitise its superb image collection and to make it readily available online to its global network of offices.

WWF has also been able to commission professional photographers to cover and illustrate its programmes and projects, and to further enhance its image collection.

Objectives & Commitment
Apart from providing WWF programmes and projects with financial investment and value in kind, the partnership with Canon also generates opportunities to raise awareness of conservation through promotional materials and activities, product and retail promotions, communications at events and exhibits as well as targeted merchandising.

The commitment between the two organisations also includes raising employee awareness within Canon Europe and providing an opportunity for Canon staff to participate in ‘hands on’ conservation projects.

Other actions

The WWF partnership also reaches out to Canon employees across Europe, who are encouraged to participate in “hands-on” activities in nature parks. One group spent a week at Fulufjället Park in Sweden, constructing and erecting new marker boards as well as building and repairing footbridges and walkways.

During 2005, Canon implemented a responsible paper purchasing strategy according to WWF’s guidelines and became a member of the WWF European Paper Group, a think-tank of major buyers and users of paper products who take a holistic approach to paper sourcing, production, and use, as part of a broader corporate responsibilty agenda.
