Sweating on Ice, The Himalayan Probation (Book)

Elmo Francis Antartica I'm climbing my mind and not the Mountain

Written by our brand new Mojo Elmo Francis.

This true story is about a man’s quest to climb the highest mountain range in the world, the Himalayas. The author set out soon after the 9/11 attacks, and his tales describe the journey of a person who was rejected, challenged, and ridiculed, and in the end, was caught in a terrorist attack that changed the world. This is the story of an adventurer who embarked on his passage against all odds but was convinced that he would find success despite being bullied and doubted by his superiors.

This is a true story of challenge, triumph, and the spirit of never giving up. A junior executive’s journey to change the way the world interprets class, race, poverty, and how the world fails to see potential. In his book, Elmo wants to make his readers understand and appreciate how one can rise from the ashes if one is genuinely dedicated and committed.

He goes on to describe the journey in his own words and highlights the key events that led him to climb the high Himalaya. He describes in detail the expedition and how he managed to climb the highest mountains in the world. His journey takes him from being unknown to becoming a well-known figure who has found his place in the mountaineering world and has helped put a small tropical island on the mountaineering map.

This is an autobiography and true documentary of Elmo’s expedition, his first high-altitude expedition into the great Himalayas. The literature explains his challenges and all the ordeals he had before and during the expedition; everything from the excitement, challenges, ordeals, wonderful people he came across, the food he ate, and the clothes he wore, and how in the world did he do this expedition just after the 11 September attacks in 2001 and the LTTE rebel attacks in Sri Lanka, all while being in the tourism industry.

You might also find that he is using a simple form of English and eloquence is avoided as much as possible, and this is more of a storytelling form. The language is free flowing and is very simple to understand. It is a cross between a photo journal and a documentary. The writing is also a little humorous as he would like you to enjoy and learn from the experience. However, this book is really factual as there is nothing for him to exaggerate. This is not about climbing Mt. Everest or the Himalays, this is more about the experience, the lessons learnt and what the mountains taught him.

Most will know the name of the mountain and then follow the height, but since the name Everest was given after idenftifying the height, I will follow the historical path to Everest’s discovery. Elmo Francis is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, IGB and was also featured in Nat Geo for the program out of the Ashes in 2004. He is also an award winner for Earthwatch Research Institute and a member of Association of Polar Early Career Scientists.
