The Montreux Jazz Talent Award 2021 has been awarded to the Belgian singer and composer Meskerem Mees. The 21-year-old artist performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival alongside eight other emerging talents selected by the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation. Meskerem Mees was elected unanimously by a jury that comprised both professional judges and members of the public, as well as an Artists Committee, including Yaron Herman, Anne Paceo, Shabaka Hutchings and
Michael League.
We did a thing over at the @montreuxjazzfestival and… we won the thing! Hooray! Many thanks to all three juries for this unique opportunity.

Julius
I’m a 21 years old singer-songwriter from Belgium. I make (indie)folk music inspired by Laura Marling, Jeffrey Lewis, Courtney Barnett, Joni Mitchell , Kimya Dawson and many more. Occasionally, I get to share the stage with my high school friend Febe Lazou. She plays the cello though she’s actually a classical pianist at heart.
I present to you, my debut album Julius!
A name that from now on shall not only be associated with a certain famous Roman emperor, but also with the beloved donkey who grazes the field at my parents’ place and this musical documentary of my trouble teenage/ young adult brain . Julius will be yours from the 12th of November. The album that is, not the donkey…
